Member vs Guest Account Help

What is the difference between a Guest and a Member account?
Member accounts have the ability to BookChat and Read our entire library of books. After the 7-day trial period is over, Guest accounts can only Read and BookChat using the Book of the Month, unless they are BookChatting with a Member.

Do both parties need to pay for a membership to use Readeo?
No. Readeo is set up so that you can enjoy the service by connecting to a variety of people including those with Member or Guest accounts. For the best Readeo experience, at least one party should be a Member. This will give you the ability to read any book in the Readeo Library when connected in a BookChat, even though one in the party might be a Guest.

Someone in my family already has a Member account. Do I need one too?
Not necessarily. If one party in a BookChat is a Member and the other a Guest, you will both be able to read any book in the Readeo Library together. Members do enjoy the benefit of being able to read any book on the site solo, but otherwise, to enjoy BookChats together, only one party needs to have a Member subscription.

Can you give me an example of how these accounts work?
You bet! Grandma lives in San Diego, CA. She has three children and a total of five grandchildren, but they all live scattered across the country. Granny is a hip grandma and knows she can still read with all five of her grandkids despite that distance. She goes to Readeo.com and purchases a Member account, then tells each of her kids to sign up as Guests.

Grandma and the grandkids connect with each other on Readeo and share storytime regularly. Granny can now build relationships with all five of her grandchildren across the country.

See the graphic below that illustrates this situation:
How a family could connect on Readeo
The orange dotted lines between the Guest accounts indicate that they can read the Book of The Month together for free, even though they’re registered only as Guests.

What is the Book of the Month?
Our Book of the Month is a title chosen each month by Jenny, our Editor. Jenny has over 20 years experience in Children’s Literature and works with our publisher partners to feature one outstanding book each month that anyone on Readeo can read for free. After their trial period has expired, this is the only book that Guests can read solo or use to BookChat with other Guests.

Can a Guest BookChat with other Guests?
Yes—but after their free trial periods have expired, Guests can only BookChat using the Book of the Month. This is a great way to try out Readeo, but to get the full experience, one party should have a Member account.

Can a Guest read books from the Readeo Library?
After the trial period has ended, Guests can only read our Book of the Month solo or with other Guests. To read the other books in the Readeo Library, you must upgrade to a Member account or connect with a Member in a BookChat.

How can I try Readeo for free?
All Member accounts include a free 14-day trial. You can use the site including all the books in the Readeo Library and cancel anytime during that period without being charged. Two Guests can also BookChat using our Book of the Month. You’ll be able to experience Readeo just like you would if you had a Member account, except that you will be limited to the Book of the Month. After your free trial period is over, you will need to upgrade to a Member account or connect with a Member in a BookChat for access to the rest of the books in the Readeo Library.

How many BookChats can I start per month?
As many as you’d like! We don’t limit the number of BookChats—our goal is to get you reading with your loved ones as much as possible.

How many people can I connect with in a BookChat?

BookChats are one-to-one, meaning only two people are allowed in a BookChat at any one time.

Can I read books in Readeo’s Library without being in a BookChat?
Yes! Guests can read our Book of the Month, and Members can read any book in our Library.

I bought a Member subscription on Groupon. How do I redeem it?
First off, nice move- those Groupons were a steal. Redeeming them is easy. Go here and enter your Groupon into the “Promotional Code” field. Create your account by clicking the “Create My Account” button and you’re set. That’s all there is to it.

How often am I billed?
Member accounts are billed every month on the day you first signed up for monthly subscriptions and once yearly for annual subscriptions. For example, if you opened your account on February 6th, your account will be billed on the 6th of each month or each year on the 6th, respectively. Guest accounts are always free.

BookChat and Reading Help

How do I load the bookshelf I created?
Once you are in the BookChat or Read window, click the Show Bookshelves button. In the window that pops up, there will be a drop down list titled ‘Select Bookshelf’. Click the arrow and select the name of the bookshelf you would like to open.

I don’t see my friend on my list. How do I invite them to a BookChat?
You can only invite friends to BookChat that appear on you’re My Friends list. To add friends, type their name in the ‘Search for friends’ box and click ‘Go’. Find their name in the search results and click ‘Add Friend’. Once their name appears in your My Friends list with a green dot by their name, they are online and available to BookChat. Simply click their name and select BookChat or click the BookChat link in the top right corner of the Profile page and select their name from the list.

If you searched and can’t find your friend, that probably means that they haven’t joined Readeo yet. Click the “Invite someone to join Readeo” link on your profile page to send them a quick email telling them to get with it.

Why can I only read one book?
After the trial period has ended, Guest accounts have full access to our Book of the Month. To gain access to our entire library, upgrade to a Member account or start a BookChat with a Member.

What books can I read for free?
Our Book of the Month is the only book available for free to all users.

Technical Help

Help! I can’t see video or hear audio.
There are several factors that could be causing this problem. Here are some first steps to take:

  1. Make sure your webcam is plugged in / turned on
  2. Make sure your speakers are turned on and the volume is up (but not too far up :) )
  3. Make sure your microphone is plugged in and activated
  4. Make sure you are not running any other video chat programs
  5. Make sure the stove is turned off—just checking to see if you’re still reading :)
  6. Make sure you have the latest version of Java and that it is enabled in your browser
  7. Make sure your computer has the latest updates

If you’re still having problems, please let us know through live chat (see the button at the top right of this page) and we’ll do our best to help you get up and running!

I get a message telling me I need to activate Java. So how do I?
Activating Java is simple, but the steps depend on which browser you’re using. Click here for details on each browser.

Will Readeo work on my iPhone or iPad?
Currently, no. Readeo’s books are served up using Adobe Flash. Since neither the iPad nor iPhone support Flash, we’ll have to wait until Steve Jobs takes a job at Adobe or Readeo creates an HTML5 version of our product. One is more far-fetched than the other. Stay tuned.

Readeo doesn’t seem to be working on my Mac. What’s going on?
Opera and Chrome on Mac are not currently supported, try using another browser like Safari or Firefox. Note that the video chat does not currently work with 64-bit Safari on Mac. To fix this issue, use Safari in 32-bit mode, or use Firefox while we’re working on support for 64 bit Safari.

How can I switch Safari to 32-bit mode?
It’s not as hard as it sounds. Just follow these quick steps:
1. From the ‘Applications’ window, right-click the ‘Safari’ icon and select ‘Get Info’.
2. From the ‘Safari Info’ window check the ‘Open in 32-bit’ mode option and close the window.

3. Restart your Safari browser (closing the Safari window is not enough). You may quit Safari either by right-clicking on the Safari icon in dock menu and selecting ‘Quit’ or by selecting ‘Quit Safari’ from the Safari application menu.
